Orange Out!

October 23, 2023
By Susan Laielli

On October 12, the St. Dominic Savio Varsity Volleyball team hosted their first-ever Orange Out game. Typically, most volleyball teams host a "Pink Out" game to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. One of the Varsity Captains, Sarah Pettinato, suggested the Orange Out night as Orange is the color that represents Blood Cancer Awareness (for blood cancers like Leukemia), as this is a special cause so close to her heart.
The girls leveraged social media to encourage attendees to wear orange, sold t-shirts to middle school night attendees, and created an orange-out concessions table. Prior to the game, Sarah spoke to the crowd in a moving speech about why this was such a special night for her. By bringing together Orange Out night, Middle School night, and House Council night (points awarded to houses for attendance at the game), early estimates show the girls raised somewhere close to $1900.00 for charities that support families dealing with Blood Cancers.
