Savio Football Defeats San Antonio Cornerstone in Season Opener

The St. Dominic Savio Eagle football team opened the 2015 season at home in grand style with a 27-13 win over San Antonio Cornerstone Christian.

The Eagles were dominant on both sides of the ball as the offense rolled up over 400 yards of total offense, and the defense came up with big plays to thwart Cornerstone drives.  Senior running back George Miksch was a workhorse for the Eagles carrying the ball and rushing for over 100 yards, and senior QB J.R. Flores threw two touchdown passes to senior Marty Sedlacek.  Sedlacek was also a force on defense coming up with two interceptions.

Coach Gutilla said, "The win was a great way to start, and we had a number of players step it up, but it was our offensive and defensive lines that should get the credit for giving us the spark we needed."  Leading the charge was senior Simon Scales and junior Will Bradley.  Coach Gutilla was also pleased with the performance of kicker Santi Sustaeta.  "It was Santi's first football game ever, and he did a great job filling in for injured returning kicker Victor Martinez."

This Friday the Eagles will head north on I-35 for a 7:30 showdown with arch-rival Waco Reicher.  The Cougars lost their opener to Regents.  The Eagles have revenge on their minds after last year's 13-6 loss to Reicher.
