Service Academies & ROTC

If you are interested in attendind a Service Academy or pursuing an ROTC Scholarship, there are specific steps that must be followed.  Please review the information below regarding admission to the Service Academies.

JUNIOR YEAR
• Inform your college advisor of your interest in either the ROTC programs/military academies. Most students apply to both
• Take the most challenging classes you can handle
• Take the SAT and ACT and have them sent to the ROTC programs and academies
• Write letters of interest in the academies to your congressmen, senators, vice-president and in some cases the president of the United States requesting a nomination to a service academy.
• Meet with liaison officers and ROTC liaisons regarding your applications
• There are often service academy briefings by congressmen and senators in Texas. Please try to attend one which is convenient for you to attend since these can be very helpful
• Fill out online your interest in the service academies so a file will be opened for you.
• Apply for a summer experience at one or more of the service academies, which sponsor these programs.

Over the summer/between junior and senior year
• Attend one of the summer military academy programs at the service academies of your choice
• Complete the applications for nomination required by your senator, congressmen, vice president or president
• Start and finish the ROTC scholarship application to be part of the early review boards which are usually easier to pass
• Start working on the academy applications so when you return to Savio in the fall you will be ready to submit
• Take the medical exams required by DODMERB (Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board). These exams will include a physical, eye exam and dental appointment. These exams are free and they are applied to both the ROTC and military academies. Please inform these doctors to send this information to both programs.

SENIOR YEAR
• Submit final applications to all service academies early in the fall.
• Submit final applications to congressmen, senators, vice president and president early in the fall.
• Submit final applications for the ROTC scholarship programs early in the fall.
• Senators, congressmen, and other officials will ask you to interview with their own academy selection committees. These interviews often occur during either the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays. These individuals must submit their nominations for the service academies by January 31st of the year the student plans to attend.
• Apply to colleges if you are applying for ROTC scholarships. Know which schools have which ROTC programs. Not all schools have all programs, especially Naval ROTC.
