BASKETBALL:

The Savio Eagles made a proud showing on the court last night with wins for all three games beginning with the Boys JV team.

Boys JV: Coach Paul Alvarez – “Savio JV won over Concordia JV 52-25. Our record improves to 4-0.  Schyler Hallberg led all scores with 12 points, all 3 pointers! The scoring was evenly spread out among all the players. It was also our best game as far as rebounding goes.

Next up we play San Marcos Academy, who is sure to test us. They have always been known to have a great basketball program and is consistently at the top of their district.”

Girls Varsity: The Lady Eagles followed with a dominating win over Concordia ending the game at 54-31.

Boys Varsity: Coach Jan Jernberg – “The Savio Eagle boys basketball team continued a solid run last night with a victory over the Concordia Academy Cardinals by a score of 56-28.  After a slow finish in the first half, the Eagles rolled in the 2nd half behind Cole Korte’s 14 points, Ricky Minor’s strong board work and an outstanding performance off the bench by John Kistler.  This victory moves the Eagles’ non-district mark to 6-2.

Savio will host San Marcos Academy this Saturday with games beginning at 12 noon.”

Head Boys Basketball Coach Jan Jernberg hosted the 1st Annual “5-Point Mini-Camp” for 5th-8th grade boys and girls from all around the Austin area at Savio over the Thanksgiving break. Coach’s summer basketball program, Lone Star Hoops LLC, presented a two-day, high-energy, total immersion basketball event covering 14 hours of instruction on the “5 primary points” of successful basketball–shooting-individual offense, ball-handling, passing, rebounding and defense. There was a full-house of 54 boys and girls coached by a great staff of seven coaches. Coach Jernberg was joined by Coach Tim Kaman (Texas AAA Coach-of-the-Year 2010), Ben Faulkner (Junction HS), former college and professional player Luke Axtell, plus Savio assistant Paul Alvarez, Mr. Brian Motto, head girls coach Brooke Bailey and some members of the Eagle basketball programs. The clinic was a great success and plans are in the works for a second “5-Point Mini-Camp” for 2nd-8th graders the first three days of Spring Break, March 12-14, 2012.  Details will be forthcoming next semester.

“The Savio Eagles, not at their top game, still managed to scratch out a 50-47 overtime victory over Georgetown’s Gateway Prep on the road.  The Eagles were led by Cole Korte’s 19 points and some great support work by Ricky Minor.  Falling behind 21-8 in the early stages, the Eagles fought back only to have Gateway tie the score with 2 seconds remaining.  In overtime, with two primary starters on the bench, fouled out, a number of subs stepped up to play great defense and nail down the win.  Daniel Miksch and Nick Zamora, among others, played key roles in this effort.  Savio has now moved their record to 5-2 as they enter the holiday break.  Also, the JV remained undefeated with an overtime win 52-48, depending on great late-game defense to help them garner their 4th consecutive victory.” – Coach Jernberg

Both the Lady Eagles basketball and soccer teams also competed Tuesday night.   The basketball team played against Summit Christian at home and secured another game with a 63-21 win.

The soccer team played Waco Reicher away and was up 1-0 at half time with a goal by Bailey Hallberg.  Reicher came back with two goals and Hallberg scored another goal in the last minute securing a 2-2 tie.

Seeing a story in the news about the food shortage at the Capital Area Food Bank due to the recent needs of the local wildfires, one of our students suggested that we start a canned food drive to help out. In a week, we were able to bring in over 1000 pounds of canned goods, which equates to about 843 meals. Thank you for all who helped out. The Capital Area Food Bank continues to need donations for the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays. For more information on how you can help, please visit: http://www.austinfoodbank.org/

The Lady Eagles Varsity team fought a hard, physical battle against New Braunfels Christian last night and walked away with a sound win, 75-33.

The boys Varsity also won their game with a final score of 57-36.

Coach Jernberg – “The Eagle boys started slow against New Braunfels Christian before getting on a roll in the 2nd half. Entering the 3rd quarter with a slim 19-16 lead, the “Aquilas” exploded for 38 points in the last two quarters.

Cole Korte led all scorers with 26 points, 18 in the second half.  Before fouling out, Ricky Minor notched 10 points and hit 5 free throws to help Savio pull away.  Chaz Anthony also contributed 5 assists in the hard-fought contest.
