Since the doors opened at St. Dominic Savio three years ago, the upstart Eagles have looked up to the volleyball tradition at St. Regents. The 2006 state championship and multiple trips to state is something they’ve wanted to achieve.
On Saturday afternoon at Concordia University, the Eagles took down the Knights in a TAPPS Class 3A state quarterfinal — 21-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-13.
“Last year they took us out in the first round and it’s a school we respect,” senior Heide Hausheer said. “Being down 2-0 early was something that we didn’t plan, but we fought back. I think for sure we came out overconfident. Our age showed.”
Hausheer is the only senior for the Eagles (21-15), who will travel to the state semifinals on Friday in San Antonio. The St. Dominic Savio volleyball program is in its second year .
Hausheer and CeCe Flore led St. Dominic Savio with 13 digs apiece. Anna Mooney had 10 kills, Yaneisy Lua had seven kills and five aces, and Abby Miksch had six kills and four blocks.
St. Regents (19-17) was paced by Avery Osborn’s five blocks, Sarah Knop’s 12 digs, Meredith Nagel’s 31 assists and Megan Stookey’s 14 kills.
St. Dominic Savio coach Jeff Cooper thought his team could control the net, but wasn’t pleased with the slow start.
“We beat them earlier this year so I think the girls came out a little overconfident,” Cooper said. “This is our first time on a stage like this. Once we settled down we were fine.”

Ten Servant Leaders took the Capital Metro Train downtown on Tuesday to lend a helping hand in the baby closet at the Gabriel Project Life Center located in the Catholic Charities building on East 6th Street.
Sorting baby clothes, building client folders, and learning about this Pro-Life organization were all highlights of the trip. Taking the train was also a great adventure. We will be planning another trip like this soon and will announce details when available.
The Lubbock Christian Lady Eagles traveled to Austin Monday night for the Area round of the TAPPS 3A State Play-offs. After using the gym this morning, our Savio Lady Eagles and coaches joined them to dine on a pasta luncheon compliments of Savio parents and the HSA.
