(AUSTIN) – The Iron Eagles robotics team from St. Dominic Savio Catholic High School in northwest Austin will compete at this year’s FIRST World Championship in St. Louis on April 27-30. The Iron Eagles won the Southwest FIRST Tech Challenge Championship hosted by the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington on March 5th.  After scoring zero points in the first match at the regional competition, the team fixed a small programming glitch and stormed through the rest of the day, dominating their remaining 8 matches to win the championship. In addition, the team won two team awards (the PTC Design award and the “Think” award) and were finalists for two other awards, including the prestigious “Inspire” award. Descriptions of the awards can be found here.

St. Dominic Savio is a small, private high school in its second year of operation with 182 students in freshman, sophomore and junior classes. School Parent  Michael Butler, an R&D – Mechanical Engineer at National Instruments, serves as head coach and started the team at St. Dominic Savio last school year with two other local engineers. The fledgling school finished in the top six in the 2010 Southwest FTC Championship before falling in the semifinals.  So, the small team is very excited to have won one of two regional championships in Texas and is busy raising money to attend the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis April 27-30.

About the FIRST Tech Challenge
The FIRST Tech Challenge is the newest game in the FIRST family, placed between the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). Each year FTC releases a new challenge and playing field for competing teams.  Each team after analyzing the challenge, designs and programs their own robot to compete against other robots in a set playing field with limited intervals.  Like FRC, the FTC is aimed at high school students, but its lower cost, longer season, and smaller, pre-defined set of components make it the perfect program for fledgling teams to get started in the FIRST program. As a result, it is also the fastest-growing FIRST program in the nation.

St. Dominic Savio did well at the Spanish Poetry Declamation contest at the University of Texas on Saturday, April 9th. There were more than 400 students participating this year.  Freshman Jessica Phillips won second place for Spanish I, and Macarena Cruz won first place overall for Spanish III Native Speaker!   This is the second time in as many years that Savio has won in that category (Pamela Izaguirre won last year).  Also,  congratulations to Brittney Bowman, Alejandro Gutierrez, Cole Korte, and Maura Weis for earning honorable mentions. They all did really well.
